Anniversary trip turns into two-year stay in Syria

Anniversary trip turns into two-year stay in Syria
My wife, Suellen, and I enjoy spicing up our lives with travel and enjoying the art and food of other countries, now that our children are grown. We celebrated our 25th anniversary in Italy. We have visited Buenos Aries, Argentina, as well; so in 2006 we thought we'd stretch ourselves a bit with a new culture.

We traveled to Damascus, Syria, for a two-week trip, and enjoyed it so much we went back for a two-year stay from September 2006 to September 2008.
We found that Syria is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Damascus is the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. The old city walls still stand; and the street called Straight continues to bisect the city.

Arab hospitality is remarkably welcoming and we felt safe in our travels. Syria is not the tourist site that Egypt is, with its pyramids. The Syrians do not get many North American visitors. Therefore, they are exceptionally warm and courteous.

Getting on the road to Damascus was a journey of a lifetime. Here are some of the images that we will carry with us.
